Hungary showcased its prowess in Greco-Roman wrestling by claiming three medals at the U20 World Wrestling Championships held in Bratislava. The standout performance came from László Koppány, who earned a silver medal in the 130kg category. Koppány made his way to the finals with impressive victories over competitors from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt, before falling to Russia’s Ali Ilyasov, the reigning world and European champion, in an 8–0 match.
Adding to Hungary’s medal tally, Zalán Toplak secured a bronze in the 77kg category. Toplak, who represents Ferencváros, navigated through the repechage and clinched his spot on the podium with a decisive 10–2 win against Giorgi Gogelashvili of Georgia. This achievement marked Toplak’s first medal at the World Championships, signifying a milestone in his wrestling career.
Another bronze for Hungary was won by Petro Zsitovoz in the 67kg division. Zsitovoz demonstrated resilience by overcoming an early deficit to defeat Egypt’s U23 world champion Mohamed Abdelrehim 11–3 in their placement match, further contributing to Hungary’s successful showing at the event.
The championships commenced with the Greco-Roman category, drawing eight Hungarian athletes as part of a 22-member delegation representing the nation. The performances of Koppány, Toplak, and Zsitovoz underscored Hungary’s strength in this wrestling discipline, highlighting their potential for future competitions.
