Hungary Requests US Waiver on New Russian Energy Sanctions

by admin477351

Hungary’s TISZA party is seeking an exemption from recent U.S. sanctions targeting nations that purchase Russian oil and gas, a move prompted by concerns over Hungary’s energy security. The appeal follows the enactment of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, signed by President Donald Trump on September 18, which empowers the U.S. administration to levy tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian energy, with certain conditions and exemptions.

Márton Hajdú, chairman of Hungary’s Foreign Affairs Committee, has been actively engaging with Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives to discuss Hungary’s predicament. Hajdú emphasized the importance of U.S. support in Hungary’s pursuit to diversify its energy sources amidst its heavy reliance on Russian imports. Hungary currently imports approximately 5 million tonnes of Russian crude oil and 4.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, underscoring the significance of these resources to the country’s energy supply.

The TISZA party, recognizing the potential impact of the new U.S. measures, is strategizing to decrease Hungary’s dependence on Russian energy. The party’s efforts to secure an exemption are part of a broader initiative to mitigate potential economic repercussions while exploring alternative energy sources.

This development could play a pivotal role in shaping future Hungary-U.S. relations as the implementation of the legislation progresses. The U.S. will need to determine which significant purchasers of Russian energy will face additional tariffs, with Hungary’s request for exemption adding a layer of diplomatic complexity to the situation.
