Greece Leads UN Security Council Amid Key Global Issues in October

by admin477351

On October 1, Greece took over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, marking its second and final term as president during its 2025–26 tenure as an elected member. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will lead the 15-member body throughout the month.

The Security Council faces a challenging agenda, with key focus areas including the ongoing war in Ukraine, the escalating conflict in Gaza, tensions surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, violence in Sudan, and the ongoing security crisis in Haiti. These issues are expected to dominate discussions as Greece assumes its leadership role.

In Haiti, the Council’s involvement remains crucial as an international security force works to curb armed violence and stabilize the nation ahead of planned elections. The situation requires sustained attention from the international community to ensure a peaceful transition.

Additionally, Greece’s presidency coincides with significant discussions regarding the selection of the next UN Secretary-General. The Security Council is tasked with recommending a candidate to the General Assembly, with the new Secretary-General scheduled to begin their term on January 1, 2027.
