Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has stated that the European Commission is open to Greece’s request for increased temporary fiscal flexibility to combat rising energy costs. Despite this positive reception, Mitsotakis warned against expecting substantial financial relief measures from the European Union.
After attending a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels, Mitsotakis highlighted his government’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline while safeguarding the economic progress Greece has achieved since its financial crisis. He made it clear that Greece would avoid large-scale spending initiatives aimed primarily at gaining political favor.
In response to escalating energy prices and living costs, the Greek government has implemented subsidies to relieve household burdens. Mitsotakis is pursuing additional leeway to deploy targeted and temporary support measures within Greece’s financial constraints.
Mitsotakis emphasized that Greece would continue to manage the energy crisis with measures it could afford, while also seeking more flexibility from European institutions to extend further assistance when necessary.
