Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP members in the European Parliament have claimed that the European Commission is not addressing recent constitutional and political changes in Hungary, which they argue are weakening democratic institutions. The concerns were voiced during a joint session of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control.
MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László from the delegation have urged the Commission to state its position on a series of issues, including amendments to the constitution, limitations placed on political competition, modifications affecting parliamentary mandates, and the autonomy of state institutions. They highlighted that the Commission had previously expressed rule-of-law concerns and had withheld EU funding from Hungary, but has remained silent on these latest changes.
The lawmakers questioned whether the constitutional alterations align with European democratic standards, noting the Commission’s lack of response. The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation emphasized that the principles of democracy should be uniformly upheld across all European Union member countries.
During the hearing, representatives from the Commission did not offer detailed answers to the questions posed by the Hungarian lawmakers. The situation raises questions about the consistency of the European Commission’s stance on democratic norms within the EU, particularly in light of previously raised issues.
