Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called on Greece to steer clear of actions that might escalate tensions in the region, expressing particular concern about Athens’ increasing defense ties with Israel. Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s desire to maintain positive relations with Greece, urging Athens to consider Turkish security concerns, notably regarding the military presence on Aegean islands that Türkiye believes should remain demilitarized under existing agreements.
Despite efforts in recent years to ameliorate their relationship, Greece and Türkiye continue to face unresolved issues over maritime boundaries, territorial waters, and the military status of certain Aegean islands. Greece has defended its actions, citing national security concerns and its sovereign right to defend itself.
Fidan also took the opportunity to criticize Israel’s military operations in Syria, suggesting they pose a potential threat to regional stability. He reiterated Türkiye’s support for Syria in its pursuit of security, governance, and economic renewal, advocating for diplomatic resolutions to regional conflicts.
In addition, Fidan discussed ongoing regional security collaboration, highlighting a developing partnership involving Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The foreign minister mentioned that the three nations are working on formalizing this partnership and exploring ways to broaden their cooperation.
Türkiye remains committed to fostering regional coordination on security matters, which includes addressing issues related to Yemen and threats facing Saudi Arabia. Emphasizing the importance of diplomatic solutions and regional stability, Fidan underscored Türkiye’s dedication to collaborative efforts in these areas.
