Germany has shown interest in collaborating with Greece on a new submarine construction initiative, centered around the advanced Type 212 CD submarines. This proposal was discussed during a meeting between German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias, at the Crete Firing Range.
Pistorius emphasized the strong partnership between Germany and Greece, suggesting that the construction of these submarines could potentially occur in Greece. The Hellenic Navy’s future submarine program is projected to be considered post-2030, with vessel selection discussions expected to start following Greece’s national elections in 2027.
Greece’s Defense Minister Dendias reiterated the nation’s commitment to enhancing defense relations with Germany. This includes joint military training, improving operational coordination, hosting German military forces, and procuring compatible military equipment.
The discussions also covered broader defense cooperation topics, such as the participation of Greek and German forces in the Kosovo Force (KFOR), pilot training programs in Kalamata, and Greece’s interest in acquiring IRIS-T SLS air defense missiles.
This dialogue between the two countries signals a mutual effort to expand defense cooperation and explore opportunities for shared military production and training initiatives.
