Hungary Airlines Expands Cargo Services, Reshapes Operational Strategies.

Hungary Airlines is navigating shifts in the European air cargo landscape after a €3 customs duty on small shipments was implemented on July 1. The new duty has influenced e-commerce cargo volumes across the continent, sparking an initial surge in shipments during June as retailers hurried to dispatch goods before the rule’s enforcement. This was followed by a noticeable decline in July, accompanied by increased processing times. While the market is slowly finding equilibrium, industry participants are bracing for an additional €2 processing fee anticipated in November.

Amid these developments, Hungary Airlines had planned maintenance for its leading Airbus A330-243F, with registration HA-LHU. Global supply-chain disruptions, however, have prolonged the aircraft’s C-check until mid-September, with expectations to resume full operations by the latter part of the month. To adapt to the evolving market conditions, the airline intends to alter its route network, refine cargo-handling processes, and temporarily scale back flight frequencies to enhance aircraft load factors.

Compounding these operational challenges, Hungary Airlines is preparing for the departure of its second aircraft, the Airbus A330-243P2F registered as HA-ZTO, following the owner’s decision to sell it. Despite this reduction in fleet size, the airline remains dedicated to expanding its operations and is actively considering leasing and other growth opportunities to maintain a robust fleet.

In a strategic move to diversify its services, Hungary Airlines is venturing into specialized cargo markets, including live-animal transport and temperature-controlled shipments. Starting in the third quarter, the airline will implement real-time monitoring technology to offer more tailored services, aiming to capture higher-margin business opportunities.
